My dear son, sadly, has been on medicines since he was 3 months old. He had really bad reflux and started on Zantac and then Prevacid. Plus, he has allergies. Which means, at about 6 months, in addition to the reflux meds, he started on Nasonex and Zyrtec, then moved to Flonase and Singular. He's had a number of sinus infections and so we add antibiotics to the list. He just turned 3 and continues to be on a series of medicines! My heart aches when I have to give him all these meds!
With that said, he takes his medicine really well. However, not all kids are like him. Most kids HATE taking medicine and it becomes a real battle! So, parents have to become creative. Here are some tips on giving antibiotics to kids. You can use these tips for giving any medicine. Good luck and hope your little one doesn't need to take medicines long-term.
1. Amoxicillin comes in chewable tablets (who knew?!!)
2. Always administer with a syringe rather than a spoon
3. Mix it with yogurt, pudding, chocolate syrup, ice cream (ice cream was a big hit)
4. Give her control by letting her self-administer
5. Put it in the back of her cheek and give her a quick blow in the face and she will swallow
6. Omnicef comes in a strawberry flavor kids love
7. If you get Amoxicillin insist on bubble gum or grape flavor (berry and orange bombed completely for us)
8. Give it by shot (for some reason it is the most painful type of shot and has to be done with anesthesia unfortunately)
9. Always have a favorite food or drink on hand to chase it with
10.Have someone else give the medicine (our daughter took it with no fight when
Auntie gave it to her)
Yucky Medicine!

Welcome to Parents Start Here!
Mama Sprout here! As a Mom, I am overwhelmed by all the things out there for and about kids and family! Where to start? What are the most important things needed? What fits our needs the best? What's healthy behavior? What are "normal" bodily functions? In order to make informed decisions, I talk to alot of parents and I've joined online parent groups.
